Barack Obama has praised his former vice president’s own choice of running mate saying “Joe Biden nailed this decision”.

Mr Obama shared a statement on Twitter just minutes after Mr Biden named California Senator Kamala Harris as his prospective VP.

“By choosing Senator Kamala Harris as America’s next vice president, he’s underscored his own judgment and character,” Mr Obama wrote.

Donald Trump’s predecessor in the White House called Ms Harris an ”ideal partner to help him (BIden) tackle the very real challenges America faces right now and in the years ahead”.

The choice has sealed Ms Harris’s place in the history books, as she becomes the first black woman to compete on a major party’s presidential ticket.

The 55-year-old first-term senator is also one of the party’s most prominent figures and quickly became a top contender for the number two spot after her own White House campaign ended.
